Individual Therapy for Adults
Individual therapy provides a space for building a trusting relationship with someone who is focused on what you want and need. If you are looking to make changes in your life and learn how to be less critical of yourself as you work toward your goals, I can help you get there.
The adults I work with have often been struggling with significant mental health issues or interpersonal problems for years and have tried a lot of different things to deal with them on their own. Many of them developed some helpful strategies or found “good enough” ways of coping that worked for a while, but are now looking for more long-term strategies or less self-destructive means of alleviating distress.
Based on the specific needs and goals of each client, I incorporate aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and schema therapy to help people get what they want. I offer in-person and virtual therapy for adults experiencing difficulties related to:
Anxiety
ADHD
Complex trauma and PTSD
Substance use/addiction
Perfectionism
Mood disorders
Personality disorders
Relationship challenges
Low self-esteem
Identity and values exploration
What to expect in individual therapy with me:
Holistic, evidence-based approach: Mental health treatment is about more than just your symptoms. I’m dedicated to providing the best treatment for you that incorporates the unique aspects of your lived experience and therapeutic approaches backed by research.
Exploration of underlying causes for current problems: Many people have trouble understanding the “why” behind how they act, think, and feel. Our work together will involve identifying and examining behavioral and relational patterns that can help us connect your past experiences to current struggles.
Skill building and practical application: A large part of my therapeutic approach is providing knowledge and teaching skills so my clients feel empowered to take steps toward improving their lives. Our therapy will involve figuring out what strategies will be most helpful for you and how you can translate what we discuss into making changes in your everyday life.
Emphasis on acceptance and self-compassion: Many people can easily identify the things they want to change about themselves yet struggle to recognize or value their strengths and abilities. Regularly practicing acceptance and self-compassion helps many people reduce the intensity of their symptoms and cope with challenges in their lives. I help my clients learn to accept themselves as they are and decrease their reliance on self-criticism as motivation to change.
